Dinner
Let’s make dinner, Shall we?
You know I love some gesamtkunstwerk.
So where to begin? The soil, of course! I grew up with a big garden - that’s my dad with his three daughters. I’m the one looking up at him. He was my hero! I would watch him work in the garden as a child and sneak strawberries when I could. When I became disillusioned by architecture in college, I left to pursue sustainable agriculture for a year and it resonated deep into my childhood soul.
Now I’m thinking it’s time to gesamtkunstwerk up some dinner…
Pizza
I’m starting with pizza.
I’ve been baking homemade pizza for the past three decades. Wow. How is that possible? I was trying to remember how long it’s been last night and I got 20 years, which seemed like a lot of decades. Maybe there was a decade when the kids were young that I didn’t get one made every week, so I’ll revise back to two decades of weekly pizzas.
So many pizzas! So much dough. I started with Instant yeast and switched to sourdough in 2017 with lots of fat in the pan so it gets crispy like Jet’s. Actually, we just discovered ghee, which is the best yet for the perfect balance of pillowy and crisp.
Growing ingredients
This past year I grew gobs of basil and we’ve been making homemade pesto from the frozen leaves. Delicious! We had fresh tomatoes during the summer, and I’m scheming how to turn some into sauce for next year.
